How the syllabus splits across Class 11 and Class 12
A question the unit list above does not answer, and one that decides how you sequence a two- year plan: both years carry roughly equal weight, and NEET does not favour Class 12 the way students assume it does.
This matters most for two groups. If you are in Class 12, your Class 11 material is not background — it is about half the paper, and it is the half you last studied a year ago. Revising Class 11 in parallel is not optional. If you are a dropper, the same logic explains why a uniform restart is wasteful: work backwards from which year's material actually cost you marks.
A useful reality check is to open any previous-year paper and mark each question as Class 11 or Class 12. Most students are surprised by how much of it is Class 11 — and it is a faster diagnostic than any advice article, including this one.
The syllabus tells you scope, never weight
The most common mistake made with a syllabus document is reading it as a study plan. It is not one, and it cannot be.
A syllabus lists what is examinable. It never says how heavily each unit is examined — and in NEET those differ enormously. Two units printed as equals on the page can be worth six questions and one question respectively.
Weightage has to be measured from past papers, because it is not published anywhere. We counted it across all sixteen papers in our archive, and the two subjects behave in opposite ways: Physics is top-heavy (three blocks carry about 77% of it), while Biology is remarkably flat (its largest block is around 17%, its smallest about 8%). How to use a syllabus document properly
- Use it as a checklist, not a reading order. Print it, tick each unit when you have covered and tested it — not when you have merely read it.
- Check your material against it, not the other way round. Older coaching modules and second-hand notes often carry topics that have since been trimmed. Time spent on a removed topic is time spent for nothing.
- Let it settle arguments. When a book, a video and a friend disagree about whether something is in the syllabus, the notification is the answer.
- Do not infer difficulty from unit size. A long unit entry is not a hard unit, and a one-line entry can carry several questions a year.
What to expect for 2027
In recent years NMC streamlined the syllabus by removing some chapters (for example, a few Physics/Chemistry/Biology topics). The structure has otherwise been stable. Until the 2027 bulletin is published, prepare on the unit list above and treat the official notification as the final word on inclusions and deletions.
